59 - The Freed S*aves Became Obsessed
### Chapter 59: Obsession of the Freed Slaves "You're talking about the Tower Master?" The Tower Master, owner of the magical tower. The title alone suffices to explain what kind of being he is. Not just the keeper of a tower, but the symbolic pinnacle of the magical realm. "Indeed, the Tower Master! Just now, I sensed it all at once. Child, you are a being several dimensions higher than others. You can become one!" Edmund’s expression resembled that of a worshipper who had witnessed a deity, yet Mirabel’s response was unimpressed. "I'm not really interested." "Child, you say that because you are still young and don't know. Being the Tower Master means reaching the peak of all wizards." Mirabel pondered for a moment. Tower Master? She still wasn't interested. Finding Karami was her top priority. But even if she met him again, what difference would it make? Failing to have her worth recognized had previously been disappointing. If nothing had changed and they met again, it would just lead to another disappointment. She didn’t want to be abandoned. She needed to raise her value before they met again. "If I become the Tower Master, will my value increase?" "Value? Discussing value concerning the Tower Master is something only foolish people do. All the world's magicians will look up to you." Tower Master. Yes, one must at least be a Tower Master to boldly claim to be Karami's slave anywhere. Also, perhaps she could create the world Harold dreamed of, where witches need not hide. Becoming the Tower Master might make it possible to create the world her family longed for. "I’ll do it. I’ll become the Tower Master." Determination filled Mirabel's eyes. *** "Therefore, I, Edmund Alexius Wilmore, recommend this child as the Tower Master." After ten years, the Council of Elders convened. Five elders and the nominee, Mirabel, gathered in the conference room. The elders sat around a round table, with the chair reserved for the Tower Master notably empty. More precisely, since the mysterious tower first appeared and the first Tower Master perished that same day, the position had remained vacant. Becoming a Tower Master is not just a matter of desire. The selection process is mainly through recommendation, and only when all five elders unanimously agree can one ascend to the position. In other words, a Tower Master has never been chosen. For rather trivial reasons. They couldn’t stand setting someone weaker above them. It seemed boring. They disliked it due to old age. Didn’t like how someone looked. Hated bald heads. And so on. With trivial complaints, a Tower Master hadn’t been chosen for centuries. Since the elders shared responsibilities, it was permissible to keep the position vacant. Under this tacit agreement, the balance among the five elders was maintained for a long time, and even with Mirabel’s determination, she might not become the Tower Master. "So, there was such a thing as the Tower Master..." The speaker was Darenor. The Dark High Elf elder who had managed the tower since the first Tower Master era. The tower discriminates based on neither race nor age. Meritocracy reigns supreme. Any competent magician is qualified to become a magician of the tower. Mirabel being a young girl wasn’t a hindrance. Her potential for growth even added bonus points. "So it was you who recently shook the tower!" A young boy leapt up, making a fuss, and each time his black wings fluttered behind him. The mischievous rogue of the tower. Zakarel Vermor. A demon born in the demon realm, at the opposite end of the continent. From appearance comparable in age to Mirabel, yet with a soul nearing immortality. He came to the tower to break it as a pastime, and stayed as an elder for fun. To Zakarel’s eyes, Mirabel was a newfound toy. Zakarel’s eyes curled with playful mischief. "You're strong, aren’t you? How strong? Play with me!" In a moment, darkness blanketed the surroundings. A spectacle reminiscent of a dark sea unfolded. The dark sea roiled ominously with waves. With a sharp hissing sound, sharks emerged from the sea. They seemed substantial yet flickered like mist. As if catching the scent of blood, they circled Mirabel momentarily like predators. The dark sea tore as if splitting the water and surged forward. Sharp, gleaming teeth shone dangerously. However, the sharks' teeth never reached Mirabel. An indigo reaper appeared in the air, swinging a scythe, dividing what should not have been tangible sharks in half. "Oh!" Two thumps of a staff. The tranquil ripple sketched by the staff calmed the furious waves. The sharks rose under Mirabel’s feet before crashing against an invisible barrier on the water's surface. The tranquil dark sea. A ceasefire. Zakarel clapped his hands in glee. "Wow! You're the first to block my prank! Everyone else panicked, couldn’t use magic, and got eaten." "I'm not that impressive." "Haha! Hearing someone say that is a first. You’re really fun, huh? It feels like fun things will happen with you around. Alright, I agree!" The first prank of the mischief-maker was passed. Edmund quietly exhaled and surveyed the elders. "What do you all think?" "She's human. It's okay if things don’t work out since we'll just select another in a hundred years." "Karssia, and you?" Karssia flicked his snake-like tongue, then slithered back to his laboratory. It meant to do as they wished in a rough translation. Including Edmund, four elders had agreed. Naturally, attention turned to the last person. The recommendation for the Tower Master divides into two main gates. First, play with Zakarel. Most who dreamed of becoming Tower Master succumbed to his mischief and met their demise. ### Chapter 59: Obsession of the Freed Slaves (Part 2) Once overcome, gaining approval from the other elders wasn’t difficult, given their laissez-faire attitude. Yet, the position of Tower Master remained unclaimed. The reason was the final gate. "Huu...." A broad-brimmed, extravagant conical hat. A dress clinging tightly, leaving no curves of the sensuous female body obscured. A woman holding a long, thin pipe. The final elder, Morgana Cherisein. She was the elder who consistently quashed Tower Master candidates by picking on their appearance. Regardless of their outstanding abilities, it was inevitable. Morgana exhaled a long breath after removing the pipe from her lips. Smoke infused with magic curled upwards in thick plumes. As the smoke slowly dissipated upwards, "Pass." "Hm? Are...are you serious?" "Yes. She's cute. Adorable things are always welcome. The dull tower could use some vigor for a change. Moreover..." Morgana's eyes, partially hidden under her hat, narrowed at Mirabel. Sentiments mixed like paints on a palette were evident in her gaze. "As an adult, one should nurture a young witch." Morgana winked playfully. Edmund sighed. It was a sigh of exhaustion rather than relief. So, the only determinant for the Tower Master was appearance? Whatever the varied reasons might be, the fact remained that all five elders had agreed. A new master of the tower was born. Yet a slave. *** Despite the arrival of a Tower Master, no dramatic change occurred within the tower. Ultimately, for wizards, personal magical research sits above all else. They remained barricaded in their labs, much like cockroaches. Mirabel was no exception. Currently, Mirabel found herself at the very center of the tower, lounging in ‘mid-air’ engrossed in reading. Around her, hundreds of magical books orbited at a consistent speed like Saturn’s rings. Each book held more extraordinary secrets than any practical advice manual. As the new Tower Master, Mirabel had the right to consume them. Reading one book rapidly, tossing it away, then grabbing a new one repeatedly. To onlookers, it might seem nonsensical, but Mirabel was diligently absorbing magic. She went beyond being a witch to become something transcendent. And the world didn’t know, she wasn’t aiming for global dominion — she just wanted to earn the attention of her master. Swoosh. A space within Mirabel's book barricade distorted, and a reaper appeared. "You’re here?" The reaper nodded. Mirabel paused her pursuit of Karami to become the Tower Master. Being a Tower Master, she was still inexperienced. She would meet him once she honed her magic further. In the meantime, Mirabel had secretly devised a plan. Mirabel had traced the minuscule amounts of Karami's magic within her. It led her to Karami's current location successfully. Karami was in the beastman country of Bestia. And as expected, surrounded by slaves. Though she envied those near Karami, Mirabel held back. The time wasn't right yet. Instead, she harbored a small ambition. She employed the reaper to sever the shackles on their souls. The magic imbued in Karami’s bonds was her true goal. They were no longer Karami's slaves, but that didn't concern her. Her situation was more pressing. Mirabel confirmed the magic the reaper retrieved. The unimposing darkness of the magic appeared more precious to Mirabel’s eyes than anything else in the world. When breaking their shackles, jealousy surged: ‘Why do only you wear the master’s bonds?’ Yet, she no longer felt it. Mirabel collected Karami’s magic. She infused it within her soul. She molded it. Into shackles. In her mind, Mirabel crafted black shackles. She fastened them upon her own soul with her hands. Click. It resembled a sound she thought she heard. Mirabel’s expression softened after painstakingly fastening the shackles. Her body shivered with exhilaration, eliciting a long, languid sigh: "Haaa...". "This is it...." The feeling of being utterly owned by her master — her soul confined. This pressure. This sense of security. It felt indescribably good once again. After parting with Karami, her sleep was disturbed; tonight, she could finally rest well. ‘For once, I should dream of playing with my master.’ Cuddling close. Eating slime fries. Casting a simple spell upon herself, Mirabel hugged her staff tightly and closed her eyes. ### Comments Section 심해속상어 (DeepSeaShark) - 2024.10.04 15:39 "I can only describe that as insane." 0 zeelgam - 2024.10.17 22:01 "This is legendary." 0 시키키키키느 - 2024.10.29 16:26 "Turns out freeing all 5 is impossible, haha." 0 라먀 - 5 days ago "It is possible though, right?
