Volume Two 35~Decision of the Higher-Ups (Dual Update) Author: Han Tang Returns Updated: 2025/5/15 21:30:01 Word Count: 4249 The original timeline had shifted dramatically, possibly becoming unrecognizable to her. Aesphyra had already been aware of this shift, especially after the duel between the Dragon Knight Order members and Wenny occurred prematurely with a completely different nature, and Wenny used an arcana unrelated to sinister magic. With this, the world line had become increasingly uncontrollable. Though she could predict what might happen, she had completely lost track of the additional variables. Aesphyra understood that knowing the original timeline's trajectory in such situations was not necessarily beneficial. It might even lead to preconceived notions based on her understanding of the previous world line, causing her to lose the insight she should have. Such things inevitably happened. But Aesphyra still couldn't wrap her head around it. She was certain she hadn't overlooked any extra details. Why is this happening? Where did these massive changes come from? Could it be because Wenny turned from his wicked ways this time, and his position was filled by someone even stronger than the original Wenny?? Aesphyra doubted this. It's as if no one could imagine someone being able to foresee and control the future. It was impossible for anyone to notice her cautiousness towards the [Bronze Blood], and when she threw the antidote into their potion, she used [Saintly Favor], pausing time—no one could have known. Who could it be?? Judging by [Bronze Blood]'s reactions, they shouldn't be aware of her actions. However, it's uncertain. Could there be an extraordinary figure among this era's [Bronze Blood]?? Aesphyra couldn't figure out which aspect went wrong, leading someone to discover her plan to undermine [Bronze Blood]. Nearby, Wenny glanced anxiously at Aesphyra, who remained silent. "Hey, big sis, say something, won't you? Don't stay silent at a time like this!" Wenny urged hastily. "The vile creatures were mocking you, claiming you're at your wit's end. Don't let these fiends act so arrogantly! As your number one fan, I'm the first to disagree with their nonsense!" Wenny exclaimed, slapping his chest. "Wenny, if I remember correctly, your card-playing friend also showed signs of a cold before, didn't he?" After some thought, Aesphyra spoke calmly. "Yes, that's right. What about it?" Hearing Aesphyra bring it up, Wenny felt a twinge of apprehension. The protagonist's insight was unquestionable. While he might doubt Aesphyra's fidelity in matters of the heart, he couldn't disregard her protagonist's intuition. If Aesphyra sensed danger concerning Fred and the others, it was unlikely the situation would resolve happily. "In that case, you'd best go help your friend now." Aesphyra's fingers brushed the sacred sword's blade, and her beautiful eyes closed slightly. "What?? Not even you can handle this?" Wenny was taken aback. "I'll stay and deal with them; you go help your friend, go help Milessia." Aesphyra reversed her grip on the sword, holding it behind her back. Gone was the playful and teasing tone she often carried; now remained only a deadly calm. She walked towards the fanatic, the night wind bearing a tinge of melancholy, lifting her beautiful silver hair. Within the sacred cathedral, only her steady and commanding footsteps echoed. Despite knowing the original path of the world, she couldn't prevent unforeseen changes from causing this tragedy. Aesphyra was getting serious. She needed to uncover what exactly was happening and who was orchestrating these events. "My friends... will they be alright?" Wenny couldn't help but ask. "I cannot guarantee that." Wenny received the expected answer, yet what Aesphyra said next was surprising. "I'm sorry." Her apology caught Wenny off guard, and he lifted his gaze to the steadfast, determined figure in the wind. Aesphyra apologized to him? This was something Wenny hadn't even dared to imagine. Who would have thought someone with a mortal grudge against him in a previous life would one day apologize? She must be blaming herself for not saving those who fell victim to the infection, he thought. Even Wenny understood it wasn't Aesphyra's fault. The notion of controlling the future was fantastical, and, in this matter, she was similar to him: it was hard to truly trust others. Despite her apparent grace, cheerfulness, and high teasing abilities, perhaps in both lifetimes, no one managed to truly enter her heart and gain her trust. Who would divulge their secrets to others? In that respect, Wenny and Aesphyra were quite alike. And there was always her tremendous self-confidence. Aesphyra was someone with significant self-assurance and, once setting a goal, would follow through unwaveringly. Such people often acted according to their own decisions, believing they could handle things solo when executing plans. Although Aesphyra hadn't expressed these sentiments, Wenny somehow understood. "This isn't your fault. Thank you for trying to help my friends, Aesphyra," Wenny sincerely thanked her back. In that moment, Aesphyra felt a rare sense of warmth and closeness to him. Now, Wenny understood why Aesphyra was the protagonist. Leaving aside her character setting of being fickle, which was partly shaped by player input, at her core, Aesphyra possessed a strong moral compass and integrity. Thus, even during their most strained moments, when her hatred for him burned deepest, she hadn't used her [Saintly Favor] silently to remove the one she despised. Thus, she tirelessly strove to utilize her knowledge of the original world line to save others. Thus, she felt guilt and self-reproach for those she couldn't save, taking the blame upon herself. Aesphyra did not respond or turn back, but Wenny knew she'd heard him. In fact, it was the first time she'd heard Wenny express gratitude toward her. ‘Virtue +20.’ ‘Current Virtue: 324.’ "Be careful. I know you're strong, but that's a fanatic among the strongest of Eurnes' retinue. Even masters aren't their match; there are undoubtedly tricks and powerful techniques it hasn't unleashed yet." With that, he understood remaining would only become a burden to Aesphyra and distract her with concerns for his safety. He lifted his [Iron Fortress] and ran outside the cathedral. He left it to Aesphyra to handle here. After all, the Calryman Academy probably was in utter chaos by now. Wenny dashed out of the St. Selina Cathedral. The students and teachers who were previously inside had vanished, and this included Shikondell. Wenny wasn't too concerned about Shikondell's safety. With Milen by her side, she likely faced no danger. After all, Milen ranked within the top five upon entering the academy and held strong feelings of affection and guilt towards Shikondell. She would undoubtedly go to great lengths to ensure Shikondell's safety, even if it meant putting her own life on the line. A booming explosion echoed once more from within the cathedral, the force of the shockwaves alone making Wenny’s scalp tingle. He bowed his head and rubbed his ears, aware that it was Aesphyra squaring off against the fanatic in a full-scale clash. Unlike the fanatics, who mindlessly sought destruction, Aesphyra had to keep the cathedral’s security in mind, dividing her attention while battling the zealot. All Wenny could do now was hope that Aesphyra, as the destined protagonist, was bound for victory. It was probably the first time he ever prayed for Aesphyra’s triumph, hoping she secured a resounding victory. He ran towards the floating blood-red altars, memories of past moments flowing into his mind. “Those blowhards... better not get themselves killed,” Wenny muttered under his breath, gritting his teeth. They were his first friends at the academy. Unlike others, they were unassuming nobles or lesser-heirs of noble families, not deemed important. They didn't judge him for his status, didn't look down on him for his tarnished reputation, nor were they impressed by his rank. It was a pure friendship built around their shared goddess. “Damn it, Fred, you still owe me two packs of cards. Don't think just because you're avoiding me, I won't dig through heaven and earth to drag you out!” Wenny yelled at the sky-borne blood altar in anger. “You better hold on!” Before he could leave the courtyard cluster of the cathedral, a massive stone pillar, ablaze, toppled in front of him, blocking his path. “Damn it, can't you idiots read the room? Don't you know I'm racing against time here?” Wenny cursed as he noticed multiple dark figures descending from above, encircling him. However, as the flames illuminated his view, he realized these were human faces wearing the uniforms of Calryman Academy! “What are you doing? Picking on me is one thing, but doing it now? Even if you were going to eat dirt, at least pick a better time for it!” Wenny frowned, sensing something off about these students. True enough, the students had expressionless faces, their eyes hollow and lifeless, resembling marionettes. If not for their breathing, one would hardly feel the presence of life within them. Collectively, they summoned their arcana, aiming at Wenny. “Damn, so it's true then.” Wenny pressed his lips tightly. These were the students under demonic control after imbibing the potion. Why hadn’t that male student fetched the instructors yet? The reason was now becoming clear. Expelling the academy's informers had taken away many combat trainers. Protecting the students fleeing the cathedral had further split their forces. Emerging zealots had kept the trainers preoccupied. Who could have predicted [Bronze Blood] had another move to play, controlling infected students pumped with the potion? With combat trainers too overwhelmed and these controlled students causing havoc, the situation was slipping from control. "Hey, move out the way. Quit blocking my path. Don't you remember who you are?" Wenny demanded with a frown while clutching [Icicle Fang]. The students remained unresponsive, stiffly approaching him like the undead. “Damn it.” His options to escape were limited: either transform into Vannesa or unleash [Icicle Roar] with the [Icicle Fang]. Using the powerful [Icicle Roar], however, might freeze these students to death. Stuck, Wenny was at an impasse until a pair of strong wings swept in, forcing the controlled students back with gusts of wind. The scent of familiar citrus filled Wenny with a jolt, and he looked up, spotting the blonde girl with draconic features gliding under the moon. “Wenny, grab my hand.” Without hesitation, Wenny reached out and grasped Mirexia's hand, and she whisked him up into the sky. On the ground, the controlled students gazed blankly skyward, swaying without a clue of what to do next. Mirexia carried Wenny to the top of St. Selina Cathedral. Battered by the winds, Wenny’s face paled, but he paid no mind. “Mirexia, what's going on? What are those blood altars in the sky around the academy?” Wenny asked, panting with urgency, bypassing questions about Mirexia's sudden appearance. “…A large number of students have turned into monsters. The cause is still unknown.” Mirexia's composed demeanor did little to hide the urgent circumstances, so she kept it brief. “The students have gathered in front of the Order Spire, forming a barrier that makes entry impossible. They might be summoning something.” “It’s as I feared… Damn it!” Wenny slammed his fist against a nearby pillar in frustration. “Do we have any fighting power left?” Wenny asked. “The situation is dire. The trainers are all engaged in combat, even those mainly academic instructors have joined the fray, along with many of the senior students.” Mirexia’s voice was heavy with gravity. “What about the higher-ups? How are the academy authorities responding?” Wenny pressed on. With the situation so dire, surely the leadership couldn’t remain unresponsive? “The higher-ups have made a decision—a solution to this crisis.” Mirexia took a deep breath. “Then why aren't they implementing it?” Wenny caught a hint of something ominous from her expression. "The academy leadership has, unfortunately but firmly, decided after urgent research that although these students retain human appearances, their internals have changed entirely." “They share the same physical and life traits as the demon god’s familiars... In other words, they've all fully transformed.” “The moment the virus was activated, the original them died.” Wenny fell silent. “How can this be??” “How... can it be?” Wenny leaned helplessly against one of the cathedral roof's decorative columns, sliding to the ground. “So, what’s the leadership's decision?” Wenny asked hastily. “…To eliminate all the students turned into demon god’s familiars,” Mirexia stated, her tone devoid of life. 2025/05/17/22/22 Share this book: One-click share on Sina Weibo QQ Space QQ Friends Baidu Tieba Tencent Weibo Baidu Favorites Baidu New Homepage Copy URL Vote Up Previous Chapter ← Chapter Directory → Next Chapter Add Bookmark New Book Recommendations: Is It Strange for a Guy to Enroll in a Witch Academy How Could the Villainous Young Master Be a Saintess?
