Chapter 109: Luo Xiu is the Most Annoying - I Forged Them in Darkness, and They Buried Me in It
Chapter 109: Luo Xiu is the Most Annoying It seemed that ever since entering this room, Eileen hadn't been quite herself. Luo Xiu didn't put much thought into it and instead offered a gentle smile, saying, "My dearest Eileen, could you please cooperate with me on this?" His tone was soft, trying to appeal to her emotions and reason. Unfortunately, Eileen was clearly unmoved by such words. She folded her arms, shuddered, and felt goosebumps rise up. Her eyebrows arched sharply, as if her little mouth were smeared with honey. "Shut up, shut up! It's disgusting!" Selina, seeing this, was about to interject, but then heard Eileen muttering softly, "It's not that I can't go along with this act, but you have to know that I'm only doing this for Selina's sake. Don't get the wrong idea..." Eileen shuffled her steps, positioning herself in front of Luo Xiu once more. She subconsciously lifted her chin, her expression returning to its usual sternness. "You were the one who asked for my help," she stated coldly. Luo Xiu was taken aback but then chuckled and nodded. "Yes, I was the one who asked." His plain words left Eileen momentarily speechless. The lines she had prepared stuck in her throat, and she fumbled, unsure of what to say next. After a short while, she stomped her foot, covered her ears, and sprinted down the corridor. "Annoying, annoying, Luo Xiu is the most annoying!" Her awkward demeanor only made Luo Xiu smile even more. Witnessing everything, Selina gently nudged Luo Xiu with her forehead and softly complained, "Lord Luo Xiu, Eileen is actually a very pitiful child, you shouldn't always tease her." Luo Xiu innocently brushed Selina's smooth cheek with his finger. "Selina, you accuse me undeservedly. When have I ever bullied her? Clearly, I'm the one being picked on." "Look, I was just going along with what she said, and yet I'm the one she ends up disliking." Selina put a finger to her lips, pondering carefully. "Well, Lord Luo Xiu, although it does seem that way..." ... Late at night. In Luo Xiu's study. As usual, he sat at his desk, poring over books. Most of these books were ancient, with their authors lost to time. They had weathered the years, becoming worn, with many words nearly illegible. Beside the desk was the petite figure of Selina. The girl would accompany Luo Xiu like this every day, not saying anything, just silently sitting nearby, occasionally staring at his profile in a daze. It was only after Luo Xiu put down the books that she would return to her room to sleep. Initially, Luo Xiu resisted this behavior. But eventually, when resistance proved futile and Selina's pleading wore him down, he relented. Also, late at night, having someone there, even quietly, added a sense of comfort. It assured him he was not alone; someone was with him. At the moment, Luo Xiu was holding a book about the professions across the continent of Meng En. There were three main categories of professions. First, there were warriors who relied on physical prowess for melee combat. Second, the mages like Luo Xiu. And third, those who pursued more esoteric paths. Such as alchemists and practitioners of witchcraft. Though each class was distinct, they shared a commonality on the path to becoming a deity. Upon becoming a demigod, one must conduct a grand ceremony to transcend further and acquire true divinity. Each profession's ascension ceremony was unique, and even the known mage ascension ceremonies still lacked verification. In Meng En, the idea of achieving godhood was but a vague legend. No concrete examples existed. Many scholars argued that this so-called divine ascension was nothing more than a fantastical creation from the previous century. Humans, after all, remain human; how could they dream of becoming gods? Typically, the pinnacle after reaching the rank of Great Archmage was becoming a demigod. Currently, the Pope was at this level. In his youth, the Pope's talents were unparalleled, reaching demigod status early on. However, since then, he'd shown no signs of further advancement. This was substantial evidence for scholars that the road to deity was merely a fantasy. If even the Pope couldn't break through, did it not indicate that this world's peak ended there? Influenced by this perspective, documentation and research on divine ascension dwindled. Today, such records were almost extinct save for old books. Luo Xiu had sifted through countless books on the subject, yet never found the answers he sought. He was curious whether witches had their own ascension rituals. If so, what might they be? His fingertips skimmed over the pages, feeling their rough texture. Luo Xiu's pondering was interrupted by a gentle voice. "Lord Luo Xiu, it's getting late, you should rest." Selina reminded him just in time. She was like a clock, reminding Luo Xiu when to sleep. Luo Xiu snapped back to reality, smiling. He casually pinched Selina's cheek and waved her off. "Alright, you should go to bed too." Selina obediently nodded, turning to leave the study. Luo Xiu leaned back, gazing out the window. Outside, the moon hung high, its light pure and beautiful. He mused, "What could it be?" A breeze stirred, flipping the book on the table to the section about mage ascension ceremonies. Luo Xiu rubbed his forehead, feeling weary. "Forget it, why worry about such things." He stretched and blew out the oil lamp, preparing for bed. Just then, a gentle knock echoed. Luo Xiu paused, thinking Anna had some urgent business, and hurried to open the door. Instead of Anna, he found Selina standing at the threshold once more. Slightly confused, he was about to ask why she returned, when he noticed her attire. She wore a classic blue and white maid outfit with pristine white stockings, leaving Luo Xiu momentarily stunned. "Selina, you, you are...?" Returning at such an hour was one thing, but donning such peculiar clothing made Luo Xiu wary. Selina slightly lowered her head, her ears visibly flushed under the moon's glow. She offered no words or excuses, simply nudged Luo Xiu back inside. The door quietly closed behind them.
