76 - The Cannon Fodder is Prepared to Divorce
### Chapter 76 Ji Xianzhang was someone who knew how to be both perceptive and audacious. Ever since that night when she climbed into Ye'er's bed, it was as if she had obtained some sort of pass. Though she wouldn't always stay on her bed, whenever she hugged her back, she would always lie down and snuggle for a bit. Yue Bai was deeply disturbed by this but couldn't exactly kick her out. In the end, as long as it didn't affect her sleep, she chose to let it slide. However, after a few days, Yue Bai gradually got used to it. Although it still left her feeling feeble, it didn’t make her dizzy all night. By right, Ji Xianzhang wouldn't need to specially help her relax, but once she was on the bed, how could she easily get off? In the end, the little disciple naturally admitted defeat. "She's getting more and more outrageous with you," Jiu Yi couldn't bear to watch any longer. "You can't just let her do whatever she wants!" Yue Bai was very laid-back about it. "Then what else should I do?" She couldn't hit her, nor could she kick her out. Jiu Yi was left speechless, only managing to stammer something unintelligible. In the end, relying on his absolute faith in the situation, he stubbornly added, "I refuse to believe you can't do anything about it!" Yue Bai indeed had ways to handle her, but since it wasn't a big deal, she couldn’t be bothered to argue. Naturally, this was not something she would share with Jiu Yi. Yue Bai kept it to herself and continued to nap in Ji Wunian’s arms daily. Ji Wunian wouldn't cling to her all night but would leave after a while, allowing them to focus on their individual cultivation afterward. Sometimes, Ji Wunian would go to her place, and Yue Bai would follow to provide some guidance. Their cultivation progress skyrocketed during this period, and Yue Bai’s body was also nearing its final tempering stage, growing stronger at an accelerated pace, though no one knew. Due to a lack of new missions, Yue Bai immersed herself fully in cultivation. Ji Wunian remained well-behaved, not causing any trouble, and instead spent her days closely entangled with her disciple, which made Yue Bai reluctant to deal with her. In contrast to their leisurely lifestyle, the demon realm was on high alert. Wuji was causing trouble, using Song Ze as an excuse to send many disciples, along with the Zangxue Sect, to the demon realm borderlands, making the atmosphere extremely tense. Mingyun, too, was in turmoil, with nothing but bad news coming from Liuli. Yue Bai was so closely entangled by Ji Wunian that she couldn't find time to check on matters herself. Ji Wunian, on the other hand, seemed completely unconcerned, leaving Yue Bai unsure of her true intentions. Naturally, Ji Wunian sensed her disciple’s occasional distraction and found it amusing. Unpredictably stirring her spiritual power, Ji Wunian managed to see a certain small figure suddenly curl up, clinging tightly to her. Ji Wunian suspected that the little one was probably gritting her teeth in frustration but seemingly enjoyed provoking her. Yue Bai certainly had unkind thoughts in her heart, but it wasn’t the time to show it. Instead, she softly called her, “Master.” “Don’t get distracted,” Ji Wunian pressed Yue Bai's nape, making her nestle against her neck affectionately. A process that should have taken two years was shortened significantly, naturally requiring Yue Bai to endure severe hardships. Fortunately, Ji Wunian had become more gentle, often assisting her and reducing the pain significantly. Because of this prolonged interaction, Ji Wunian visited her own place less frequently, and Yue Bai seldom saw her master. Jiu Yi summed it up in one word: “Scum.” Yue Bai didn’t mind much and summarized her reaction to his in one word: “Silly.” She didn’t let him know. “Thank you, Master, for your hard work recently.” The soft girl hanging on her spoke respectfully, though she was visibly exhausted. Her arms wrapped around Ji Wunian’s neck, head lazily leaning on her, giving up in a sort of resigned manner. Frequent teasing had stripped Ye’er of her skin, revealing her true colors even more convincingly. Ji Wunian found it amusing but had little to add. Holding her closer, she spoke more gently than usual, “Ye’er, bear with it.” Yue Bai’s gaze lingered on a few strands of hair cascading down Ji Wunian’s neck, soft as fur, dampened by water, clinging to delicate skin. The water rippled. The kind of pain that seemed to tear her body apart had become a numbing habit for Yue Bai. Instead, the slightly cool strands of spiritual energy emitted by Ji Wunian captured more of her attention. Unlike the previous tiny, silent waves, Ji Wunian began to infuse a bit of coldness into her aura, soothing and calming her. Though it contrasted with her embrace, both elements became Yue Bai’s sturdy refuge in the midst of turbulent storms. Even a driftwood in a sea of sorrow could bring a faint clarity to the mind. As she stared at the water’s surface, Yue Bai occasionally noticed a floating garment beneath, soft and slow, resembling indistinct clouds bathed in moonlight, making one want to part them. The garment left the water, cascading gently like a tiny waterfall, followed by a cool breeze, pushing Yue Bai’s already cloudy consciousness further. Ji Wunian’s approach was ruthless today. After spending quite a while in Ji Wunian’s embrace, enjoying the gentle breeze, Yue Bai recovered just enough to be too lazy to speak. “Ye’er,” Ji Wunian, holding her horizontally, lifted her arm, aligning the little disciple’s forehead with her lips. “Do you feel better now?” Already feeling weak, Yue Bai's response was barely audible in the moonlight, “Much better…” Ji Wunian chuckled softly, like wind chimes tinkling in the night. She gazed into Yue Bai’s eyes, “It’s good if you feel better.” Yue Bai slightly turned her head, staring at the distant pavilions of Sanqing, “All thanks to Master.” Ji Wunian kissed her and smiled, “As it should be.” She still owed Yue Bai a debt, so taking care of her body was only natural. Yue Bai understood and even less wished to look at her. Later at night when she mentioned visiting Songseng, she shot a cool glance at Ji Wunian. “You should check on Ayang’s soul cultivation too,” Ji Wunian, the sly fox, had many excuses, pulling Yue Bai close and fluttering her eyelashes adorably. “I miss Songseng too.” “...Just an excuse to have fun,” Jiu Yi grumbled. But no matter how much he grumbled, Yue Bai couldn’t resist her, speaking in a faint tone that still hinted at a night of passion. “In a few days, I’ll go have a look.” She also wanted to see the situation in the demon realm and, if possible, visit the demon world. Jiu Yi rolled his eyes exaggeratedly, but his host lay obediently in another’s arms, having her lips seized once more. It drove the system mad. *** Ji Wunian's meticulous plans rarely faced the harsh slap of reality. The next day, Liuli returned from Mingyun, and Zhao Zichen summoned the elders and Ji Wunian for a meeting. However, all morning long, Ji Wunian didn’t hear a single word Liuli spoke. Her gaze remained fixed on the child standing beside Liuli — a girl in plain clothes, with snowy hair, appearing around four or five years old. Despite her age, she had an icy, ethereal face and silver-white eyes devoid of liveliness. Liuli mentioned that she was Qin Shuang, the foster sister of Mingyun’s senior disciple Qin Bichu. Due to the chaos in Mingyun, Qin Bichu wanted Liuli to bring her to Sanqing for a while. “I’ve never heard of Qin Bichu having a foster sister,” Ouyang questioned, “especially one so young…” “He brought her from the North some years ago. She seldom shows her face due to a special constitution,” Liuli explained, stroking Qin Shuang’s head. “She lost her tribe as a child and injured her eyes. While she should be able to hear, she rarely responds.” Qin Shuang stood there motionless, mute, seemingly unaffected by her surroundings. Liuli withdrew her hand, smiling wryly, “To this day, she hasn’t acknowledged me.” When Qin Bichu handed her over, the girl showed no response at all. “In any case, as this is Qin Bichu’s request, it’s fair on our part to do this favor for Mingyun,” said Wen Zheng, glancing at Qin Shuang. “Raising a child, after all, is no big deal.” Seated in a dignified position, Zhao Zichen regarded this as trivial. “Since she’s here, let’s take good care of her. Liuli?” Liuli nodded in agreement. As the discussion continued, Ji Wunian remained silent. Once the meeting ended and Liuli intended to take Qin Shuang to the Wu Shi peak, Ji Wunian decided to join since Ye'er was likely at Wu Shi Square. Liuli, unfamiliar with handling a child so young, held her awkwardly. Yet, despite her silence, Qin Shuang was quite compliant. Noticing Liuli’s awkward posture, Ji Wunian frowned slightly, “Senior Brother, set her down, have her ride the sword with us.” “Oh, oh,” Liuli replied, realizing a female disciple had probably helped previously. Despite being meticulous, Liuli wasn’t very familiar with this. Ji Wunian couldn’t continue watching and took Qin Shuang’s hand, crouching to meet her eye level, speaking softly, “Little Shuang, shall we ride the sword together?” Qin Shuang’s head seemed to move slightly, but it was too subtle for even Liuli to confirm whether she had heard. Amid the silence, Ji Wunian pulled out a leaf from her sleeve and placed it to her lips, playing a cheerful tune, simple and light. Though Liuli hadn’t heard the melody before, Qin Shuang lifted her head. “Little Shuang, do you know who I am?” Ji Wunian gently guided Qin Shuang’s fingers to her own. Qin Shuang’s eyes seemed to focus on Ji Wunian for a moment, and she slowly shook her head. "I'm called Wunian," Ji Wunian smiled, her tone so gentle that it startled those around her. "Shall we ride the sword together?" Qin Shuang's delicate face remained expressionless, her silvery eyes betraying no emotion, but she nodded. Just once, yet it was a clear response. Ji Wunian patted her head. The snowy strands slipped through her fingers, while their owner seemed oblivious, her attention seemingly elsewhere. Ji Wunian’s smile deepened, but when she stood, she pulled Qin Shuang to her side and told Liuli, "Let's go." “...Do you have a knack for child-rearing too?” Liuli chuckled wryly. With the two of them riding the sword, Qin Shuang was protected in front by Ji Wunian. The child lifted her head, letting her white hair flutter slightly, though her expression remained blank, her gaze unanchored. At an age where she should have radiated childlike charm, Qin Shuang seemed robbed of both her sight and spirit, like a glacial shard beneath the Northern blizzard, devoid of warmth. "Who knows what she's been through," Liuli said with a sigh. Ji Wunian said nothing, her gaze resting on the crown of Qin Shuang’s head. Qin Shuang was so small, her hair yet unbound, a tiny whirl amidst the snowy strands. Noticing his junior’s unusual silence, Liuli called out, “Wunian?” Before Ji Wunian could respond, Qin Shuang moved. The child started turning her head downward as if searching for something. Her shoulders shifted in Ji Wunian’s grasp, one foot nearly slipping off Xi Feng Jian’s surface, alerting Ji Wunian to pull her back. “Little Shuang?” “Is there something below?” Liuli wondered aloud. “Let's go check it out.” They were passing over Wu Shi Square, and as the two descended, they naturally drew the attention of onlookers. Having always been close in the eyes of the Sanqing disciples, the sight of Ji Wunian and Liuli arriving together with such an exquisite child immediately sparked whispers among the crowd. But, Ji Wunian had no time to address this. As soon as the sword landed, Qing Shuang wriggled free from Ji Wunian and leapt down, nearly tripping. “Little Shuang!” Ji Wunian rushed to steady her but saw that Qin Shuang, after a stumble, regained balance and started running, clutching her clothing. The crowd quickly made way for her, with Ji Wunian just a few steps behind. Given her poor vision, Qin Shuang stumbled over an uneven surface, nearly falling... Ji Wunian’s heart tightened, but then there was a soft thud. A pair of arms caught Qin Shuang, steadied her. Ji Wunian finally breathed a sigh of relief, her eyes fixed on Qin Shuang’s slightly raised toes. She traced the disciple’s robe upward, past Qin Shuang’s white hair and the hands resting on her back, until her gaze met a face she knew all too well. Yue Bai gently held the white-haired child, looking somewhat puzzled at the stunned Ji Wunian in front of her. “Master?” It was rare for Ji Wunian to look so flustered. Who was this child? She lowered her head and faintly heard a small, soft voice in Yue Bai’s arms. Standing beside her, Ji Wunian also heard it, closing in to keep the conversation between the three of them. Qin Shuang finally looked up, her silver-grey eyes meeting Yue Bai’s. Though vacant, they held a faint joy. Her lips quivered slightly, and if one listened closely, they could discern the young voice. “Deity.” --- Next Chapter Random Recommendations: "Proud War God," "Addict to Cruel Love," "Seduction Marriage: The Substitute Bride of the Vanquisher," "Douluo: Don't Wait for Me to Finish CD," "Young Hero, Good Kungfu," "The Great Scientist in Naruto," "Quick Transmigration: The Heroine Kills Again," "Mysterious Dangerous Love," "The Time Travel Handbook" Privacy and cookie settings managed by Google.
