She particularly hated these persistent, sinister characters, especially this ghostly lantern, sneaky and treacherous. She regretted not stabbing it with her sword long ago. However, sitting and waiting for someone can be a test of one's patience. Before long, White Fan found the stone too hard to sit on and shifted slightly, but no matter how she adjusted, it was still uncomfortable. She had to get up and walk a few steps. She looked at the sky, noting the shift from noon to the western side, with the sun almost setting, yet still no sign of the Mad Beggar. This made White Fan wonder if the ghostly lantern was deceiving her again. White Fan walked up to the ghostly lantern and kicked the half-dead lantern with her foot: "Hey, didn’t you say the Mad Beggar was chasing after us? Look at the time now." She pointed at the setting sun, indicating it was solely to blame. The ghostly lantern was gravely injured by the small heavenly thunder White Fan had released. Ghosts and specters fear heavenly thunder the most, especially the kind from heavenly tribulations. It was a miracle it hadn’t been obliterated. "He’s coming, he’s coming, he will be here soon," the ghostly lantern weakly replied, feeling a sense of fear towards White Fan. Though it had been hiding by her side for days, it had never seen her use such heavenly thunder before. The sudden burst almost shattered its soul. What "soon" meant dragged on quite long, until the sun fully set, and then a staggering figure appeared in the distance. The figure, walking with difficulty, was the very Mad Beggar whom White Fan almost fell victim to. He had lost an arm, which threw off his balance, causing one side to sway downward as he walked. From afar, his roar could be heard: "I will kill you!" Taoist Priest Qi and Taoist Priest Zhang also saw the Mad Beggar and instinctively felt cautious towards his crazed demeanor. White Fan grabbed her long sword and charged forward, swinging her sword straight for his head. The sight of White Fan seemed to set the Mad Beggar off like he was possessed. He drooled and roared maniacally: "I will turn you into a devil child. Where are you, my obedient son?" The seemingly lifeless ghostly lantern on the ground suddenly lit up, flew into the air, and floated into the Mad Beggar’s hand. White Fan’s eyes darkened in disappointment. She didn’t expect the ghostly lantern to return to him. It had claimed to have been turned into a ghost lantern by others, but now it seemed more like it had become a real son after being with him for so long. The ghostly lantern, having returned to the Mad Beggar’s hand, seemed revitalized, recovering from the brink of death after being struck by White Fan. "My boy, help me kill her, and I will oil your lamp with her blood," the Mad Beggar promised. The ghostly lantern screeched joyfully. Indeed, from the same family, there was no good soul among them. White Fan felt deep regret, thinking she should have destroyed the lantern before, instead of believing its deceitful words. The Mad Beggar leaped back, avoiding White Fan’s advancing sword, raised the ghostly lantern, and began a chant. Lacking an arm made feeding it blood difficult, so he simply used White Fan’s sword to cut his palm and fed the ghostly lantern with his blood. White Fan angrily withdrew her sword, standing by with thunderclouds over her head, the lightning within seeming eager to strike. The ghostly lantern, rejuvenated by the blood, revealed its true power. It transformed, going from a tattered state to one that glowed anew, causing gusts of sinister wind and a rapid gathering of dark clouds, as if a great demon was about to emerge. White Fan frowned, uncertain of what the ghostly lantern was planning. She remembered it only emitted two beams of green light last time, but now the sky darkened drastically, indicating a powerful move. "Lady White," said Taoist Priest Qi from behind, as both he and Taoist Priest Zhang approached, alarmed by the sudden change in the sky. "I’ve never seen this maneuver before. Everyone, be cautious," Taoist Priest Qi advised. White Fan stood back-to-back with the Taoist Priests, holding her long sword defensively, eyes fixed on the ghostly lantern and the Mad Beggar. After the dramatic sky change, the ground began to tremble, and ancient bones emerged from the soil. They howled at the sky, venting centuries of buried resentment. White Fan felt incredulous, and Taoist Priest Zhang explained: "This is a soul-summoning technique. That wretched lantern is a soul-summoning lamp. The number of vengeful spirits here must be over five hundred years old. This desolate place, long abandoned, has seen countless deaths. The resentment filling this place could turn it into a deathly wasteland soon." White Fan could hardly believe that such ancient spirits could be summoned from the ground. Seeing the bones surging around her, she felt a chill of horror. "So what do we do?" "Lady White, do not worry. Although there are many vengeful spirits, they are no longer alive. They are just dead things. If we can break their bones, they will not rise again." White Fan saw the massive wave of bones and thought it absurd; to chop bones all day, her sword would break before the bones were all cut. It was an endless task. "No wonder everyone seeks to exterminate ghosts and evil spirits. Such disrespect for the deceased is despicable. Nobody wants their ancestors to be dug up and turned into puppets, nor wants to be manipulated after death," White Fan thought. The group continued to swing their swords, chopping at the bones. Even the Thief, though without cultivation, was proficient in swordsmanship, keeping up with White Fan and the others. White Fan swept her sword, taking down several skeletons, yet it felt like a drop in the ocean. The bone tide seemed never-ending. Seeing her companions tirelessly slashing at bones behind her, White Fan gritted her teeth and realized this couldn’t go on. Their strength was finite, and they wouldn’t last long against such overwhelming numbers. The only way to return the bones to the earth was to find the ghostly lantern and the Mad Beggar. White Fan’s eyes reddened as she plunged into the bone pile. Behind her, Taoist Priest Qi and Taoist Priest Zhang called out in alarm: "Lady White!" At this moment, White Fan was more beast than human. She transformed into her true form, a gigantic serpent, bulldozing through the bones with her powerful body, scattering them chaotically. Some of the more fragile ones were crushed to pieces under her weight. Using her innate sense of smell, White Fan swiftly located the Mad Beggar. She slithered quickly through the bones and soon found them. The Mad Beggar couldn’t believe his eyes, seeing such a creature suddenly appear. White Fan opened her massive jaws and roared at him: "Roar!" The Mad Beggar, clutching the ghostly lantern, retreated. He saw the creature before him, neither entirely snake nor dragon, but something in between. After pondering briefly, the Mad Beggar shouted joyously: "Who would have thought! This is a dragon-serpent on the verge of transformation! My boy, we’ve struck gold this time." The ghostly lantern was startled too. How could there be a dragon-serpent in such a wild place? "A dragon-serpent is a heavenly creature! Though not yet a dragon, being associated with the word ‘dragon’ means it’s practically a descendant of dragons. If we can capture this dragon-serpent and eventually drink its blood, it will be far more beneficial than human blood. Our cultivation could advance by leaps and bounds." The ghostly lantern perked up at this. Its body flickered with excitement. The prospect of drinking dragon-serpent blood meant it could grow significantly and perhaps even transform into a tool spirit someday. It had been a lantern for over a century and had grown weary of it. White Fan never imagined that her transformation into a dragon-serpent would attract such attention. If she knew, she would have ground these two to dust already. "Roar!" "My boy, deploy the Bewildering Array!" The Mad Beggar threw the ghostly lantern into the air and took out a small black flag from his back. After a flurry of incantations, several small flags flew around White Fan and fixed themselves in place. White Fan was stunned, unsure of what was happening. She suddenly found herself immobilized. Noticing the odd flags around her, she realized they were to blame. Rage filled her heart. She hated being imprisoned more than anything. Looking at the Mad Beggar, she saw the same despicable nature as the old leader of the Pure Void Sect. "Roar!" The Mad Beggar, seeing White Fan now helpless, took out a bronze sword, its name being the Dragon-Slaying Sword. Originally forged by an emperor to prevent dragon-serpents from transforming during floods, it had fallen into the Mad Beggar's hands after being retrieved from a bridge. White Fan, trapped within the Bewildering Array, saw nothing beyond and felt as though she was walking in circles. Realizing she was ensnared in a formation, she panicked, unsure how to escape. Previously, she mistook the Mad Beggar for being insignificant when he had fled in a hurry. Now ensnared, she understood he had been holding back. Frantically, she searched her belongings for a way out. After rummaging through her storage pouch, she found a small puppet she had once played with. This trinket had no offensive capabilities, and White Fan wasn’t sure of its exact purpose, but she had no other choice. She pressed a button, and the small puppet began to walk and run. In this mind-bending array, White Fan guessed that because she had a soul, it was easier for her to become disoriented. The little puppet, being a soulless object, might navigate the array better, so she decided to follow it. The little puppet walked straight without turning, and White Fan carefully followed. Before long, she managed to escape the Bewildering Array. Spying one of the small flags, she crouched and pulled it out. The illusion instantly dissipated, and White Fan, now returned to her true form, roared furiously at the Mad Beggar before her. The Mad Beggar hadn’t anticipated the dragon-serpent escaping so quickly. He was still preparing for the kill, meticulously polishing the Dragon-Slaying Sword. He raised the sword with one hand, gazing at White Fan, and declared, "Dragon-serpent, I shall slay you today." With that, he lunged towards her with the sword. White Fan was momentarily stunned by his words, and before she could react, the bronze sword pierced her abdomen. Her scales were naturally tough and nearly impervious, especially in her true form, but she hadn’t expected the bronze sword to penetrate so easily. ※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※ Thank you to the little angels who cast [King's Tickets] or irrigated [Nutrient Solution] for me ~ Thank you to the little angels who cast [Hand Grenades]: Taixiao Xian 2; Thank you to the little angels who irrigated [Nutrient Solution]: Taixiao Xian 10 bottles; Thank you all so much for your support.
