The palace he entered had massive stone walls on all four sides, adorned with familiar engravings, although he couldn't quite recall where he had seen them before. As White Fan ventured deeper, others began to hurriedly arrive outside the grand hall. Several humanoid demons now stood before the hall, visibly excited. "We’re finally back here again." "Let’s hurry inside this time. We can't afford to miss this opportunity." "Indeed." Just like White Fan, they all squeezed in through a gap in the large door, as it was virtually impossible for anyone to open it. One by one, they squeezed through the gap to get inside. Once inside, they headed purposefully in the same direction as White Fan. White Fan walked and observed his surroundings. From the outside, the grand hall seemed luxurious, but inside, it didn’t look suitable for habitation. It seemed more like an altar. On the walls was a series of magnificent murals, depicting a woman emerging from the clouds, her face radiating authority. A red cinnabar spot marked her forehead, and divine light shone from behind her. The people below her, as tiny as her finger, were continuously kneeling in worship. White Fan glanced at the mural, realizing that something with such divinity had appeared in the cultivation world. "People still believe in gods in this world?" Gazing at the indifferent woman in the mural, for a moment, White Fan thought she resembled He Yiman. However, he quickly shook his head, thinking that it was just a mural. The deeper White Fan ventured, the more he discovered. Numerous murals depicted what seemed to be a myth, featuring not just one deity but, by White Fan's count, more than a hundred and one. As he got absorbed in the murals, he suddenly heard the sound of flowing water, which puzzled him. Why would a palace have water sounds? Could there be a water channel leading outside? Following the sound, he indeed found a place with a small, clear spring. However, unlike the water channels he imagined, this was a tiny spring. In its center was a large pool, but the small spring couldn’t fill it. The water from the spring vanished without a trace shortly after emerging, seemingly seeping through the bottom of the pool. White Fan was puzzled. What good is a pool that can’t hold water? It seemed like it was built purely for aesthetic purposes. Curious, White Fan stepped into the pool and scooped up some water, only to watch it seep through his palm and disappear. After a moment, he mumbled in disbelief, "Weightless. It’s just an illusion." At that moment, White Fan sensed that others had followed him in, and they were all stronger than him, which scared him. He had thought he was alone, especially inside a tomb. Panicked, White Fan quickly hid from the newcomers and slipped past the pool to another area. Meanwhile, the humanoid demons who had just arrived smiled broadly upon seeing the small spring. Particularly the red koi demon, who rushed to the spring and took out a small jade bottle to fill it. If White Fan were watching, he would have been even more curious about how she managed to collect what seemed like an illusion without it seeping away. "Red Junior Sister, you really are quick to act. Every year, you come and fill dozens of jade bottles with this spring water. Isn’t that enough?" said one demon. The red koi demon, while filling another bottle, retorted, "I’m not the only one who takes a lot each year. Why point fingers at me? I’ve seen Tiger Senior Brother take over a hundred bottles back every year." Tiger Senior Brother hurried to explain, "I share it with the cubs in my tribe. Our tiger clan struggles to awaken intelligence innately. Without enough jade essence, it would take centuries for those cubs to develop basic intelligence." "Listen to Tiger Senior Brother, doing it for the future of our demon clan. We are oppressed by both humans and demons, and some of the weaker demons are even captured as mounts. It’s a great shame for our kind," another demon remarked. The red koi demon, with her delicate nose slightly wrinkled, continued filling the bottles, "What does that have to do with me? I’m just a small koi demon. Am I supposed to transform into a dragon and lead our clan to glory? All I want is to shed my red scales and visit the human celestial cities." Unlike the red koi demon, the other demons dreamed of restoring their clan’s former glory, capturing a significant position in the cultivation realm rather than constantly hiding. The other demons were not as obsessed with appearance as the red koi demon. Besides seeking the Transforming Dragon Pool, they were also after the jade essence from the small spring. This jade essence, named by demons over the years, greatly enhanced intelligence. Without it, dumb and clueless demons would take ages to develop intelligence and begin cultivation. Jade essence also had another use besides boosting intelligence—it could temporarily turn demons into fully human forms, without any demonic traits, even matching their auras to humans. "You waste the jade essence you take every year. You should let others come instead," one demon suggested. The red koi demon, after filling all her bottles, huffed and turned to leave, muttering, "I hand in twenty bottles every year. The rest are mine to do with as I please." She left without waiting for the others, who looked helplessly at her retreating figure. One small snake demon, particularly unhappy, stood out. Pale and small, his eyes were the only non-human feature except for his pupils. Unlike the red koi demon, he was here for the first time, and had always been at odds with her. Both believed they were descendants of true dragons, looking down on each other. According to the red koi demon, "You flower-patterned snakes are just a bunch of pests, claiming to be dragon kin because you have a boa relative. True dragon kin like us koi live in water and have similar scales." The small snake demon wasn’t just any snake. With a green body marked by yellow patterns, he disliked the red koi demon for her arrogance and constant belittling. Her selfish behavior at the Transforming Dragon Pool stirred his resentment. As the red koi demon walked down the path, she abruptly sensed someone around a corner. She rushed over, releasing her demonic energy, scales instantly protruding from her face. Yet, she found no one upon careful inspection. Frowning, she wondered aloud, "Did I see it wrong?" After she left, White Fan dropped from the ceiling, his heart pounding as he watched her departure. He whispered, "Thank goodness I can climb walls. I almost got caught. I didn’t expect to meet a demon here." It was White Fan’s first time encountering a transformed demon, and with their superior cultivation, he dared not confront them. He feared they wouldn’t spare him just because he was also a demon. Her readiness to attack was evident. At his current low cultivation, hiding was his best option. But before White Fan could take a few steps, he sensed someone else approaching. He quickly climbed back to the ceiling, watching a group of oddly-shaped beings pass by. Noting their similarities to the previous woman, he realized they were likely together. Why she was ahead, he couldn’t say. Wondering if He Yiman might also be heading this way, he hoped she wouldn’t run into trouble on her path. As White Fan thought about this, he suddenly felt a warning and quickly hid. Behind him, the small snake demon turned back, puzzled, and inspected the spot where White Fan had been moments before. "How odd. I thought I sensed another of my kind here," he murmured. However, after confirming there was nothing there, the small snake demon turned and left. Once he was gone, White Fan exhaled deeply. “That was close. He almost noticed me. It’s surprising a demon could sense my presence like that.” Meanwhile, He Yiman was trudging through the sandy terrain, exhausted. If not for the little food White Fan had earlier given her, she might have starved to death in this desert. With a giant moon hovering in the sky, He Yiman couldn’t find her bearings and decided to fly towards it. Such a conspicuous landmark gave her hope that White Fan, wherever he might be, would also head in the same direction. Ghost Lantern, absorbing the yin energy outside the barrier, finally felt sated and departed. Delighted not to sense White Fan or her anywhere nearby, he believed he had certainly left them far behind. In the winding passages of the tomb, after many twists and turns, another group found their way inside. These people wore tattered clothes, even worse than South Continent's rogue cultivators, with scruffy beards. Despite their shabby appearance, their robes hinted at their identity—they were cultivators, indigenous ones from North Continent. “We finally found this tomb. Its location changes every year. Without proper tracking, who knows how long it would’ve taken.” “We need to stay here a whole month this time. Once the moon turns golden, if we can get our hands on the Fruit of Enlightenment, it'll be totally worth it.” ※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※ Only one chapter today.
